JOSHUA WEILERSTEIN WILL LEAVE THE ARTISTIC DIRECTION OF THE OCL IN JUNE 2021

Initially signed for a duration of four years, the contract of the American chef as artistic director of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne has already been extended by two years. After several fruitful and productive years with the orchestra, Joshua Weilerstein decided not to renew his mandate as artistic director. He will leave his functions at the end of season 2020-2021. The orchestra already evaluates the full success of this collaboration, on the muscial as well as on the human level.

« All along this past few years, the OCL considerably enlarged its repertoire and played at an extremely high level, while continuing to search for new ways to make qualitative music in Lausanne. Those have been joyful years for me and I can’t wait to live the following two to come. However I am convinced that freshness and new perspectives are as valuable for the orchestra as longevity and stability » explains Joshua Weilerstein.

Signed in 2015, the mandate of artistic director of the American chef had been extended by two seasons in 2017. At the end of season 2020-2021, Joshua Weilerstein will leave his functions to dedicate himself to new projects. Since the beginning of his work with the OCL, Joshua Weilerstein strived to break the barreers which too often enclose classical music, while proposing diversified and prestigious programmes. Speeches on stage, free open house concerts and musical interventions outside the Salle Métropole, so many initiatives which quickly seduced the Lausanne audience. Internationally, the young American chef lead the orchestra for the first time to the Vienna Konzerthaus, to the Berlin Philharmony, to the Barcelona Liceu and to the Rostropovitch Festival in Baku, Azerbaïdjan.
